4 Stages Of Success

Written By: Patrick Ogunnaike on May 24, 2011 2 Comments

When you’re trying to create the life of your dreams, the most important thing is that we know where we are along the path at any given moment.

Self-awareness is the most important step because figuring out where you are and coming to terms a accepting it allows you to have a feeling of peace. Coming to terms with your current situation is like getting your bearings after you’ve been lost in the woods.

Previous to that you were probably feeling panicked not knowing which direction you should be going always worried that every decision you made would be the wrong one. After getting a look at that compass you now have some much needed confidence that you will in fact get out of the trouble you currently find yourself in.

Yesterday while watching a webinar by marketing guru Jonathan Budd, I came across a very important distinction that can help you do just that.

He calls it the 4 Stages Of Success

Stage 1: Repair and Restore

This is the stage that many of us are currently finding ourselves in. In fact a large part of the population is sitting right here. This is the stage where your world has been rocked to its foundations. You lost your job, or you’re dealing with a divorce or if you’re an aspiring MLM’er or an internet marketer, it seems that you’ve tried everything under the sun but nothing seems to be working. The main characteristics of this stage are a whole lot of negative feelings, lack of confidence, lack of trust, skepticism, pessimism and even desperation.

Well, if any of this sounds like you then its best you realize where you are. This isn’t able blaming you for being here, just realize that this is where you are. Once you come to terms with it then you’ve gone the first step to allow yourself to grow beyond it. Most people, who are here, stay here. There’s a certain feeling of righteousness in this stage that feels good at times. Everyone gets to the point sometimes where we throw ourselves a grand old pity party. The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is that they realize their here, blow off that steam then pick themselves up and get out of there rather than wasting years wallowing in it while trying to bring others down to this level too.

To me it reminds me of the descriptions of the dark side of the force in the Movie Star Wars. It can be seductive but ultimately very destructive.

For instance if you find yourself in a situation where you lost your job or your business that you’ve put everything into crashed and burned then maybe your first step to getting out of this stage you need to get a job. It may be a crappy job that you never in a million years thought you’d ever do but that’s ok because the job is simply a means to an end. You won’t be there forever. It’s not a new career. It’s just a way to find some stability, rest and recover.

Stage 2: Building Your Foundation

This stage is fairly self explanatory. This is the stage where you begin to take accountability for yourself and your situation. So you’ve been dealt a bad hand but there’s something you can do about it. There are new skills you can learn, new people you can meet, and new opportunities that can work where the last one failed, and most importantly you choose to learn from your past mistakes.

At this stage what you will have done is set out on a path and committed to it. You are learning new things every day. You’re pushing beyond your comfort zone. And best of all you can actually feel yourself growing.

In the case of business you may be making some money but you’re still investing more than you’re taking home and that’s as it should be.

Also at this stage you may still have some lingering feelings of doubt and fears about falling back into stage one. Again that’s ok you’re simply building up new muscles so of course they’re not very strong yet but the good news is that you’re on your way.

Stage 3: Reserves

I would describe this stage as the stage of “Conscious Competence”. If you’re not familiar with that term, it means that you’ve reached the point where you know what you’re doing but you still have to think about it while you do it. It hasn’t yet become effortless.

At this stage you’re making money and you’re finally able to live off the fruits of your labour. Things are taking off. Your strategies produce predictable results. You’ve developed habits that successful people in your field have. And best of all you are now confident in yourself and your ability to create success from nothing. That lingering doubt from stage 2 has faded away.

You’re learning to fly with the eagles and they’re beginning to recognize you as one of them.

So that brings me to Stage 4: Mastery

Again this stage is pretty self explanatory because we’ve all watched and admired someone who’s mastered their craft. Whether they’re entrepreneurs, athletes, artists or entertainers…

For you at this stage your success is assured and effortless. You are universally recognized as one of the best in your field. You’re the go to guy or gal.

Now don’t be fooled don’t believe for an instant that at this stage you don’t have to keep growing. There are always new things to learn and new people to learn from but at this stage you have truly reached a place where you can not only create things that benefit you but you’ve also mastered the art of creating things that will benefit others and perhaps even the world at large.

The only thing that stops you at this stage is the size of your dreams.
So here are the 4 stages again.
1. Repair and Restore
2. Building Your Foundation
3. Reserves
4. Mastery

Where are you? Like I said at the beginning of this post, only when you realize where you are can you start moving to the next level.

To your success,
